Addaura - Addaura demo 2010

Utterly stupendous atmospheric black metal from newcomers Addaura, from Washington. Along the lines of Wolves in the Throne Room and all that jazz. These lot need to do another recording soon. Can't believe this is being called / classed as a 'demo'!!!

Pan - 3 track Demo EP 1

So, here we have a new project, out of Leeds, singularly Ed Seymour, under the pseudonym of Pan. These are the first three songs released for public consumption, and may I say, they're pretty damn good. Each song has its own identity but all work well as a full set too. Massive old school black metal leanings, with Celtic Frost, Darkthrone, early Burzum being involved in the sonic make up, but also, hints of evil hardcore band Integrity bounds up every so often and stabs you in the face, especially akin to their 'Systems Overload' album.

Give this a go. Word on the streets of Leeds is that there is already a line up pieced together (some faces you will recognise from other bands), so hopefully this will continue the fine uprising of new UK black metal bands on the live circuit.

Come and have a go if you think you're kvlt enough.

falkenbach - Heralding The Fireblade

Great atmospheric, folk ladened black metal. If you like Enslaved, Drudkh, Wodensthrone and all that business then you should give these a listen.

(another alternate cover i'd never seen before, i really like this one though so thought it was worth posting up)

enslaved - Frost

Utterly classic black metal from these Norwegian (now) prog black metal legends. I'm not AS keen on what they're doing now, because their earlier releases, with their 13 minute songs, 5 riffs, absolutely intense as thundering hell all the time, harsh vocals and big stomping riffs are far more what I want to be listening to, but, they're incredible song writers, so they could be writing actual pop songs and still be doing them well, and their later, more progressive, nicer sounding output is still fantastic to listen to, but this is just immense.

dawn - Nær Solen Gar Nider For Evogher

For years, I had both this and Slaughtersun on CD, and only really listened to this a couple of times. I thought it was a pretty good album, but, then 'Slaughtersun' always seemed a better prospect for listening to, so would always opt for that.
Now, many more years down the line, I've started listening to this one a lot more, and it's absolutely amazing! Some great riffs, brilliantly pieced together songs, top class atmospheres. Simply, this is a great black metal album.

Dawn - Slaughtersun

...but, is it as good as THIS one!? Well, I'll say no, for now, but that's because I've listened to it that many times. For black metal fans, this is a mandatory piece of listening. So, I'll not whitter on any more, just get it listened to!

belenos - Errances_Oniriques

more essential french black metal. this is the re-recorded version done in 2009, originally recorded in 2001, a brilliant new version. their sound has changed quite a lot in the last ten years or so, so it was definitely a good idea for them to do this. belenos are pretty much kings of black metal for me

Be Persecuted - End Leaving

Chinese depressive black metal. On paper that sounds like a winner, and this is absolutely magnificent.

belenos - Chemins_De_Souffrance

More Belenos, you can never have too much. This is the follow up to 'Chants De Bataille', and this is another perfect recording.

Amesoeurs - Self Titled

Currently riding the wave of shoegaze-black-metal (as IF that works, seriously! I'd never have believed that combination would work until I heard it, and loved it!), here is Amesoeurs, one of the best, sadly defunct. Get this for some beautiful dark music.

acrid - Eighty-Sixed

straight edge black metalcore? well, not far off..
canadian band acrid have one of the most downright filthy, disgusting, harsh sounds that kicked about in the general hardcore scene many years back.

When the likes of earth crisis, poison the well, integrity and snapcase were doing bigger and more mainstream things, this was bubbling and gurgling and sickening folks beneath the surface. everything goes on this album, from ultra disturbing black metal in the shape of the mighty 'kisses & whistles' to various techno breaks and monstrous hardcore breakdowns, blasts and inhuman vocal weirdness. hurrah!

oh, and if you want this to be made even cooler and worth checking out.. members of acrid have also been involved with cursed, left for dead, the swarm, chokehold, grade and more! have at ye!

abigor - Verwüstung - Invoke The Dark Age

going back many years with this one, abigor, quite overlooked in the black metal world sometimes, and that's criminal. this has all sorts going on, grimness, niceness, melodies and vicious parts, even flutes! there's plenty of ritualistic sounding little segments too, be them ambient bits or from films.

not an easy sound to get on with at first if you're used to bigger productions, but it's worth getting into. some absolutely belting songs on it. i'll post up more abigor, as they're awesome.

i enjoyed writing that little piece so much, remembering how immense this album actually is, i had to switch off what i was listening to, and put this on! you should too.

diascorium - live video 'all things spoil' & 'cnidaria'

Diascorium recently played the Destruction of Colwyn Bay all dayer, July 17th, 2010, and plenty of footage was taken. This is the best. 3 minutes of ravaging, discordant, harsh doom in the shape of 'All Things Spoil', into the set closer, technical death black metal epic 'Cnidaria', the lights and bizarre imagery go together really well with the sounds... see what you think.

schattenheer - schattenheer

so, there's loads of depressing black metal, it makes me smile, and this one makes me smile almost as much as make a change kill yourself. it's brilliant!

bergraven - dodsvisioner

stunning, epic, atmospheric progressive norwegian black metal, brilliant album that you can get totally lost in.

ajattara - tyhjyys

and here is another top class blackened melodic death album from the mighty finns.

ajattara - kuolema

finland have produced some awesome metal artists, and i've only just found these recently, very fine band.

aborym - generator

for years i thought 'fire walk with me' was the best aborym cd, but, well, it's not, THIS is! absolutely magnificent melodic, twisted, spaced out black metal.
